About eco swaps

An eco swap is the act of replacing a product you already use with a more sustainable alternative that performs the same function at a comparable price. Unlike vague “go green” advice, eco swaps are specific, actionable changes — switching from a plastic-packaged shampoo to a solid shampoo bar, or replacing disposable kitchen roll with reusable cellulose cloths.

How ECLA verifies eco products

Every product in the ECLA database has been reviewed against a set of minimum criteria: credible eco credentials (certified organic, recycled content, biodegradable, refillable, Fairtrade, or B Corp), active stock at a UK retailer, and verification within the last 60 days. Products that go out of stock or have claims that cannot be verified are automatically hidden.

We prioritise third-party certifications — the Soil Association, Ecocert, FSC, Rainforest Alliance, and Cradle to Cradle are among the marks we recognise. Self-reported eco claims without independent verification are flagged.

Why price matters

One of the most persistent myths in sustainable living is that eco products are always more expensive. That’s sometimes true upfront, but rarely true per use. A £14 shampoo bar replaces 3–4 bottles of conventional shampoo at £3–5 each. A set of reusable beeswax wraps costs more than cling film today but lasts 12+ months. ECLA shows you upfront price and per-use cost where relevant so you can compare honestly.

The most impactful eco swaps

Not all swaps are equal. The highest-impact household changes are typically:

  • Switching to a renewable energy tariff — cuts home energy emissions by up to 100%
  • Replacing beef and lamb with pulses or chicken — food accounts for roughly 25–30% of a household’s footprint
  • Buying second-hand clothing — the fashion industry produces around 10% of global carbon emissions
  • Reducing single-use plastics — particularly those that can’t be recycled kerbside in your local authority area

Switching from a plastic toothbrush to a bamboo one is better than nothing, but the carbon saving is small relative to the items above. ECLA’s trade-off section is honest about this.

How to use the Eco Swap tool

Enter the product or category you want to replace — “cleaning spray”, “plastic water bottle”, “coffee pods” — and the tool searches our verified product database for alternatives. You receive up to five alternatives with links to UK retailers, honest trade-offs (including price and effort), and allergen flags where applicable.
